  • Ordnance Survey Launches Habitat Mapping to Support Biodiversity Net Gain in Development

New habitat mapping data from Ordnance Survey offers practical tools to streamline biodiversity assessments in London and the Home Counties construction

Ordnance Survey has introduced the Enhanced Land Cover Beta, a comprehensive habitat mapping tool designed to support developers in meeting the government’s biodiversity net gain (BNG) requirements. This dataset integrates multiple geographic and ecological sources, including OS aerial imagery, topography, and authoritative habitat classifications such as UKHab. It enables early-stage desktop assessments and aids ecologists in the field by providing a clear overview of land cover and habitat composition.

For construction management across London, Greater London, and the Home Counties—specifically Surrey, Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Berkshire—this development is particularly timely. With ambitious housing targets and stringent environmental policies, the ability to efficiently assess and plan for biodiversity uplift is essential. The OS Enhanced Land Cover dataset allows for faster, more accurate BNG assessments, reducing reliance on lengthy and costly field surveys.

From a practical standpoint, this tool supports project teams in integrating ecological considerations early in the planning and design phases, helping to identify potential constraints and opportunities on site. This can lead to smoother planning approvals and better alignment with local authority expectations on biodiversity enhancement.

At Atico Solutions, effective construction management includes anticipating regulatory demands and utilising cutting-edge resources to maintain project momentum. The adoption of OS’s habitat mapping data exemplifies how informed ecological assessments can reduce delays and costs, ensuring that development proceeds responsibly and efficiently within the complex environmental landscape of London and the Home Counties.

  • College Deal Enables New Brent Homes

A major redevelopment in Brent transforms former college sites into nearly 2,000 homes with mixed-use facilities and social housing provision.

A significant joint venture between Hill Group and Pinnacle Investments is set to reshape Brent through the acquisition of two former college sites, delivering approximately 1,900 new homes. This mixed-use development will not only provide residential accommodation but also integrate retail, community spaces, and high-quality green areas, enhancing the local environment and amenities.

From a construction management perspective, the scale and complexity of these projects are notable. The Wembley site, positioned prominently at Olympic Way, features linked towers of 18 and 30 storeys, requiring careful logistical planning and coordination to manage vertical construction in a busy urban setting. Meanwhile, the Dollis Hill development includes a range of buildings from four to 28 storeys, demanding flexible construction approaches to address varied structural requirements and local planning constraints.

The collaboration with the Greater London Authority and Sovereign Network Group highlights the importance of integrating affordable and social housing within large developments. The provision of 154 social rent homes funded through the Homes for Londoners Fund exemplifies how public-private partnerships can deliver inclusive housing solutions alongside commercial viability.

Atico Solutions recognises that effective construction management is critical in navigating the complexities of such multi-faceted projects. From securing grant funding support to coordinating multiple stakeholders and ensuring compliance with stringent planning policies, a disciplined approach helps streamline progress and mitigate risks. This project underscores the value of meticulous planning and stakeholder engagement in delivering high-quality urban regeneration schemes that benefit local communities.

  • New Liebherr Cranes Enhance Efficiency Across London And The Home Counties

The introduction of advanced Liebherr cranes improves site safety and operational efficiency for complex projects in London and the Home Counties.

London’s City Lifting has introduced the UK’s first Liebherr 195 HC-LH luffing jib tower crane, designed specifically to meet the challenges of tight urban construction sites. This model features a powerful hydraulic luffing system capable of fast and precise movements within a minimum working radius of just three metres, a crucial advantage for dense city environments where space is limited. The crane’s Load-Plus function temporarily increases lifting capacity by up to 25%, allowing for greater flexibility during critical lifts.

The Liebherr 195 HC-LH also benefits from streamlined logistics, with components transportable on just four vehicles and individual parts weighing no more than eight tonnes. This facilitates quicker, safer assembly using smaller assist cranes and pre-assembled elements, reducing on-site disruption and improving project timelines.

Meanwhile, Global Crane Services has added two LTM 1250-5.1 all-terrain cranes equipped with bespoke elevated operator cabs. These cabs enhance visibility and control, particularly beneficial for operations in ports and quaysides common across the Home Counties, such as Essex and Kent. This investment reflects the increasing complexity of projects requiring precise crane operation in constrained or specialised environments.

From a construction management perspective, the deployment of these advanced cranes demonstrates the importance of matching equipment capabilities to site-specific conditions. Efficient crane use not only improves safety and productivity but also minimises delays and logistical challenges. High-end construction management involves anticipating these needs and integrating innovative solutions early in the planning process to ensure smooth project delivery across London and the Home Counties.
