HS2 Completes First Green Tunnel Near London Using Innovative Cut and Cover Method

HS2’s Copthall tunnel near London demonstrates sustainable construction by reusing excavated material onsite to reduce road transport.

HS2 has recently completed its first green tunnel at Copthall, a significant milestone on the route between London and the West Midlands. This 880-metre cut-and-cover tunnel, constructed by the SCS consortium comprising Skanska, Costain and Strabag, utilises 1.2 million cubic metres of excavated material from the nearby Northolt tunnel. The innovative approach avoided the originally planned open cutting, allowing the spoil to remain onsite and eliminating approximately 100,000 truck movements that would have impacted local roads in Greater London.
