A modern, sustainable SEND sixth form in Essex demonstrates efficient construction and specialist design for complex needs.
Morgan Sindall Construction’s Essex division has recently completed Glenwood Rise, a new SEND sixth form facility in South Benfleet designed to accommodate 40 students with complex needs. Commissioned by Essex County Council, the £6.6 million project expands the existing Glenwood School, which specialises in education for pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties.
From a construction management perspective, the project exemplifies the integration of modern building techniques and sustainability goals within a sensitive educational context. The use of structural insulated panels (SIPS) combined with a brickwork façade ensures high levels of insulation and airtightness, which contribute to energy efficiency and occupant comfort. This approach aligns with the building’s carbon net-zero operational target, supported by photovoltaic panels and air source heat pumps.
The design also prioritises accessibility and specialised facilities, including sensory rooms and tailored landscaping, which are essential in delivering a supportive environment for SEND students. The inclusion of EV charging points and accessible parking spaces reflects a forward-thinking approach to site infrastructure and community needs.
This project highlights the importance of thorough planning and collaboration between local authorities and contractors to meet evolving educational requirements.
