Complex Ground Remediation Completed Following Godstone Sinkhole Collapse

An extensive repair programme in Godstone highlights the challenges of underground mine workings beneath Surrey roads.

An 18-month repair project in Godstone, Surrey, has concluded following the appearance of a significant sinkhole on the village High Street. Initially attributed to sandstone erosion from a burst water main, further investigations uncovered a network of historic sand mine workings approximately eight metres below the surface. This discovery introduced considerable complexity to the remediation process, demanding a multifaceted engineering approach.

The repair programme, commissioned by Surrey County Council, involved a multidisciplinary team including Mainmark, which specialised in ground strengthening techniques. Their work focused on targeted resin injections between one and four metres depth to stabilise weakened ground and prevent future void migration. Approximately 600 injection points were installed along High Street and Salisbury Road over a three-week period, reinforcing the subsurface before road reconstruction could proceed.

From a construction management perspective, this project underscores the importance of thorough site investigations and adaptive engineering solutions when dealing with legacy underground structures. The presence of historic mine workings beneath urban areas in the Home Counties can significantly affect ground stability and requires careful coordination of geotechnical expertise and infrastructure repair teams.

Atico Solutions recognises that effective project management, informed by detailed ground condition assessments and collaborative specialist input, is essential to navigating such complex remediation challenges. This ensures that construction works can progress safely and efficiently, safeguarding both the integrity of the built environment and the continuity of local infrastructure.
