An innovative stormwater tank in Walton-on-the-Naze will enhance flood resilience and environmental protection.
Barhale has been appointed principal contractor to deliver an £18 million stormwater management scheme in Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex. The project involves constructing a new 5,000m³ storm tank alongside the existing terminal pumping station, incorporating innovative design and tunnelling techniques to address site-specific challenges.
The scheme is part of Anglian Water’s Integrated Main Works programme and aims to increase stormwater storage capacity to prevent overwhelming the sewage pumping station during extreme weather events. This upgrade is crucial for safeguarding local water quality and protecting the surrounding environment, particularly in a region prone to flooding.
Key to the project is the tank’s “pill shaped” design, which avoids disturbing an existing aquifer and sewer line. Construction will use a diaphragm wall technique with excavation performed internally, reducing the footprint and mitigating environmental disruption. Additionally, an 84-metre microtunnelled pipeline will connect the new tank to existing infrastructure, showcasing advanced engineering solutions.
