Construction begins on new walkways to enhance passenger flow and terminal expansion at London Stansted Airport.
London Stansted Airport has appointed Farrans as the construction partner for its new skylink walkways, a key element in the airport's ongoing transformation. These walkways will connect the main terminal building to the existing satellite building, currently accessed via a people mover transit system. The new skylinks are designed to improve passenger movement and accessibility, featuring travelators and facilities for assistance buggies to support passengers with reduced mobility.
This development is integral to a broader terminal extension project that will increase the terminal’s footprint by 16,500 square metres, adding three new bays and enhancing retail and dining options. Once completed, Stansted will hold the distinction of being the largest single terminal airport in Europe, reflecting significant growth in commercial infrastructure within the Greater London transport network.
From a construction management perspective, the use of offsite pre-assembly in a vacant hangar on the airfield’s north side demonstrates efficient project planning that minimises disruption to airport operations. Transporting large skylink sections overnight using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) further indicates a strategic approach to logistics and site management, essential in a complex operational environment like Stansted.
Atico Solutions recognises that meticulous coordination, early offsite fabrication, and careful scheduling are critical for delivering infrastructure projects within busy transport hubs. Effective construction management ensures that such developments progress smoothly, align with operational demands, and meet accessibility standards, ultimately supporting the airport’s long-term strategic growth in the Home Counties.
