A specialised tunnel boring machine has commenced excavation of a new power tunnel beneath the Thames from Gravesend to Tilbury.
Construction has started on a significant infrastructure project beneath the Thames, where a Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine (TBM) has been deployed for the National Grid’s power tunnel between Gravesend and Tilbury. This 2.2-kilometre cable tunnel is a critical component of the Great Grid Upgrade, aimed at enhancing energy distribution across London and the Home Counties, including Kent and Essex.
The project involves complex engineering challenges due to the mixed geology of chalk and flint and the high water pressures found beneath the tidal estuary. To address these, the TBM has been custom-built with advanced features such as a multiple sealing system to withstand water pressure of up to 4.5 bar and a personnel airlock to safely manage pressurised work environments. The machine also includes technology for precise tunnel face support and real-time inspection, enabling efficient navigation through challenging ground conditions.
